With the increasing popularity of communicating system (facet lighting and HUD), and NIR sensors (lidar)and illumination (NIR illumination) technology being used in cars, the demand of a reliable optic simulation programs arises, by which the program can reproduce the lit aspect and correlate the physics well. This is not only important to present nice pictures in front of customers, but more for the development engineers to have a reliable reference at any design loop, to predict the defect of the system, to preview the interaction with surrounding parts and environmental lights.

Simulation for System Performance

Optic simulation ‘s main task is to provide reliable reference of the expected performance designed configuration. Preview the performance degradation and prepare the design buffer for achieving the technical requirement.

To achieve this goal, very important is to have correct elements inputs for the simulation

  • The RIGHT geometry. not the designed perfect geometry, but the manufacturable 3D data.

  • The EXACT material property. The measured brdf or a thoracic model is as accurate as possible.

  • The CORRECT simulation settings: number of rays, FOV, presuppositions

Analysis and assessment approach is another factor not to be ignored during the design process.

Simulation for System Interact with Environment

Above mentioned conditions are necessary but not all sufficient, even if these are fulfilled, it can only provide a good starting base for a close-to-real rendering.

For a vehicle, it will be driven during day, dawn and night, under most weather and climate conditions, the mechanical parts will exhaust along the time of usage. The exhaust level and weather conditions could be different if the car is used in a good road condition, a country located in a tropical zone or a temperate zone.

Before, when lighting systems function for illumination, the dust, droplet, and damaged cover glasses aren't a severe issue that need to be considered in the design phase. Recent years, the lighting system is more and more designed for communication, alarm purposes. Therefore, capability to be read and recognized by the pedestrians and adjacent cars becomes a criteria not neglectable.

The concerned environmental factors need to be taken into account could be:

  • Environment Illumination Level

  • Sun Glare

  • Upcoming Car Light Glare

  • Adverse Weather: Fog, Rain, Snow and damaged cover window (Specifically for lidar sensor)

  • Etc.

The Solution

To improve the simulation program on the lit aspect, there are many works need to be studied:

  • Further Improvement Real Material property database, and keep updating

  • Weather model: rain droplet, fog

  • Build tunable sun light system with glare, intensity, Azimuth and altitude angles along the time

  • Understand light glare

  • Understand the impact added by the measurement device: veils and glare, remove it from test data.

  • etc,

Certainly the future work won’t be done or limited with the above mentioned tasks, but to understand each task would bring us one step further closer to reality.
